We’ve published the latest episode of the podcast VĀRTI. This time, we speak with grandparents whose grandchildren live in another country. It’s a candid and moving conversation that reminds us that heritage language is not only a topic of early childhood or school years. In families scattered across the globe, it remains part of our lives across generations.
MAY 2026
I’m delighted that my short story has been longlisted for the Heidelberg short story competition for the second time. This year's theme was Heimat(en). In my story Wintertöne 1773, I write about Johann Gottfried Müthel, J. S. Bach's last student, who found a chosen home in a quiet area on the outskirts of Riga, just a few hundred meters from where I also live. According to legend, he only performed in winter, when the world was quiet enough. I love how writing allows me to travel through time and space.
APRIL 2026
My short story Es geht weiter, which was longlisted for the Heidelberg Short Story Competition "Eine Stadt schreibt" 2025, is now available to read online at Literaturcafé Heidelberg. Read it here (in German).
MARCH 2026
The third season of the VĀRTI podcast started on March 5. We continue our conversations with multilingualism experts and diaspora families. We also introduced a new segment, “Discovery,” where Signe or I surprise each other with a topic related to multilingualism or the Latvian language in the diaspora.

LV Čau! Mans ceļš mani ir vedis uz dažādām valstīm. Mani iedvesmo, interesē, fascinē stāsti, kas rodas, dzīvojot STARP kultūrām un valodām. Esmu strādājusi arī ar bērniem. Apvienojot zinātnisko interesi un pašas pieredzi, radās mana grāmata Mamma saka ābols, papa saka Apfel. Tas ir pirmais šāda veida darbs par latviešu valodas apguvi daudzvalodīgā vidē. Šobrīd dzīvoju Vācijā un strādāju pie nākamajām grāmatām. Vienlaikus veidoju raidierakstu VĀRTI un esmu iesaistīta Latvijas Nacionālās bibliotēkas pētniecības projektā, izzinot kopienu bibliotēku lomu diasporā. To visu līdzsvaro peldēšana, joga un došanās pārgājienos.
ENG Čau! :) My journey has taken me to different countries. I am inspired by people, their stories, and the experiences that emerge from living between cultures and languages. Drawing on both my research and my experience working with children, I wrote Mamma saka ābols, papa saka Apfel (Mum Says Ābols, Dad Says Apfel). It is the first book of its kind on learning Latvian in a multilingual environment. I currently live in Germany and am working on my next books. Alongside writing, I create the podcast VĀRTI and collaborate with the National Library of Latvia on a research project exploring the role of community libraries in diaspora. To balance it all, I enjoy swimming, hiking, and yoga.
